The New Year is off to a good start for the Squirt A team. They had 2 games the first weekend of the 2012 year and came away with 2 victories. The team from Crookston was the group to come to Warroad this year first on Saturday, January 7th. The Warroad guys were ready to play. The first period had seen 2 Warroad goals by Grant Slukynsky. The assists on the goals went to Gage Wilmer and Owen Meeker on the first one and Vance Kleinschmidt got the assist on the second goal. The second period began and this was when 1st score for Crookston. Warroad came back with three unanswered goals. Gage Wilmer teamed up with Owen Meeker for a score. Cameron Skappel put the puck past the Crookston goalie. Vance Kleinschmidt slid the puck across to Cade Wallace giving the boys a 5 to 1 lead as they headed to the locker room. The third period was part stop time and part running time. The boys once again came out ready to play and the score board didn’t stay 5-1 for long. Grant Slukynsky received the puck from Owen Meeker, Owen then received a pass from Gage Wilmer and the boys were up 7 to 1. The clock now moved quicker but that didn’t affect the young men. Cade Wallace score when line mate Cameron Skappel found him. Cooper Cole slid the puck past the Crookston goalie. Final the last goal was on the board for Warroad when Gage Wilmer had a little help from Vance Kleinschmidt. The final score board read Warroad 10 and Crookston 4. Max Gausen was between the pipes. The saves were a little closer with Max having 12 and Crookston having 18.

After the boys’ game was over, most of them stayed at the rink to watch the high school teams play. If you know any of these boys, you would know how activate they are.   They were back at the rink on Sunday for their second game of the weekend. They were to face Thief River Falls for the first time this season.

This was an afternoon game and once again the boys were ready. Only this time when they hit the ice, there were players in different positions. The players that are normally playing defense were now in forward positions. The coaches had mixed a few things up and the boys still were playing well. This gave the players a chance to play some different positions and learn a little bit more on what their teammates do in the position. This game would also prove to be a little lopsided. The first period would have TRF only getting 1 goal and Warroad getting 6. The scores for our boys were from Grant Slukynsky (2), Cooper Cole, Hunter Pelland, Owen Meeker, and Alex Rourk. Those goals had assist given to Vance Kleinschmidt (3), Gage Wilmer (2), Hunter Pelland, and Grant Slukynsky. TRF had gotten one more in the net to end the first period with a score of Warroad 6 and TRF 2. A quick break between periods and Warroad was back to scoring. Gage Wilmer found the net 2 times and teammates Grant Slukynsky and Cameron Skappel were given the assist. The third goal of the period came from Owen Meeker with help from Grant. The third period was running time but Owen Meeker place another in the net when Grant and Gage passed him the puck. Warroad’s final goal was from Gage Wilmer. The scoreboard read Warroad 11 and TRF 3 when it was over. Thief River Falls had 16 shots on Warroad’s Max Gausen and the TRF goalie faced 32 shots. The next home game for the boy s will be against Grand Forks Blues on January 22nd at the Gardens at 3:30. Hope to see you at the rink!

Warroad vs. Roseau

Warroad vs Roseau

It was December 27th at the Gardens and the boys from the West came to town. Our A- Team would meet them at center ice to start what would be a tense little game. Both teams would carry the puck into each other’s end of the ice and would stay there for a little while and then they would go visit the other goalie. This was giving the large crowd of people a lot of action to watch. It was going to be a “Barn Burner”.

The first score of the game came from Roseau and then Cooper Cole found the net after getting the puck from Owen Meeker and Grant Slukynsky. This tied up the game, but not for long. Roseau answered with another goal. Cooper Cole and Owen Meeker once again teamed up to end the first period in a 2-2 tie. After a quick break, the second period was underway. Roseau took the lead again. Grant Slukynsky placed the puck pasted the Roseau goalie and then got another goal when teammate Alex Rourk passed it up to him. Warroad was now ahead on the score board by 1. But luck was not on the boys’ side as the Roseau boys once again tied the score at 4-4. The ice needed to be cleaned and so the two teams headed to the locker rooms. The final period looked good coming out on the ice. Grant had another unassisted goal and of course, Roseau answered. Owen Meeker gave the puck over to Grant and once again Warroad was in the lead. The scoreboard now read Warroad 6 and Roseau 5. There was still time on the clock and Roseau came down the ice on Warroad’s goalie, Max Gausen. The game was now tied at 6-6 with under a minute to go in the game. There was 42 seconds on the clock and Roseau got the go ahead goal for the game. At the 26 second mark, Warroad had pulled the goalie and Roseau slide the puck down the ice and into the empty net. The Final score of the game was Warroad 6 and Roseau 8. This was a tough lost for the boys but they had out shot Roseau. Max had 14 saves and Roseau had 18 for the game. Their record is now 7 wins and 4 losses.

January 7th is the next home game for the Squirt A team. The team from Crookston is driving up for a 10:00 am game in the Gardens. They will also play host to Thief River Falls for the first game against them this year. This game will be on Sunday January 8th in the Gardens with the game time start at 3:30 pm. The crowd that was at the game against Roseau was great and the team wants to once again say “Thank-you” for coming to the rink and showing your support. The month of January is filled with a lot of home games for the boys so please come out and enjoy the youth players. Hope to See You at the Rink!
