Saturday night’s game against Roseau was an exciting game.  Warroad previously beat the Rams on the road 4 to 1 on December 20th.

Warroad dictated the tempo and controlled the play for most of the first period. At one points they were up 10 to 5 in shots.  And a couple of those shots were posts.

Roseau’s Bridget Slater and Hilgert both made beautiful goal saving stops within 30 seconds of each other.  Hilgert was all sprawled out.

With 3:39 left of the third period Sierra Hanowski (D. Gardner, M. Gardner) came off the left side boards, dangled, and shot the puck through a very tiny hole to score.  The puck squeezed between Slater’s right skate and ricocheted off the post and in.

Warroad struggled all game with taking some undisciplined penalties.  Roseau’s Kaitlyn Byfuglien tied it up with 1:10 left.  She scored on a freak play. She passed the puck out from behind the net and it caught Hilgert’s skate and went in.

Forty seconds into the second period Marvin redirected Francesca Huerd’s shot from the point over slater’s shoulder.

The Ram’s Tianna Gunderson tied the game at 2 with about five minutes left in the period while on the power play.

Demi Gardner made a lunch box play to retake the lead. Warroad was on the power play. Marvin took a shot from the top of the circle. Slater made the save but the puck dropped down next to her by her right post.  Demi fought through a defender, dove and pushed the puck into the net.

Roseau refused to quit, came out in the third and Gracie Olson tied the game at 15:02.  After the goal the Rams celebrated by making a pile in front of Hilgert.

Warroad responded in force, by scoring three unanswered goals by M. Gardner, Marvin, and Hanowski.

For most of the period the Rams continued to skate hard, had a couple of scoring chances but eventually you could see their hopes and spirit go up in air as the period whined down.

Hilgert faced 27 shots and slater saw 41.

Warroad now has an overall record of 14 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie.  They have two game this week.  They are at Crookston on Monday and host Proctor/Hermantown on Saturday.  Crookston’s Brianna Breiland is second in the state with 34 goals.
